Welcome!
This time of year, the most common question I hear involves winterizing your home. So, I’ve included an article to help you take steps to be more energy-efficient this winter. After all, it not only helps you save money on your utility bill, it also has a positive effect on the environment.
In a poll conducted on our website, 45% of our respondents said that their main motivation for tackling home improvement projects themselves was to save money. If that’s you, then our Bathroom Makeover show coming up this week on Today's Homeowner with Danny Lipford® will be right up your alley.
Here's to your best home!

With the colder months approaching, many Americans are looking for ways to save money on the rising cost of heating their homes.
This popular DIY project is easier than you think.
Interior Painting Preparation (video)
Painting is one of the easier home projects, but the key to success is good preparation.
Here’s one simple way to help during the winter months.
Contest Winners
The winner of our “Show Us Your Shed” contest was Scott Nusbaum of Hamilton, Indiana, and the entry most in need of a shed was Cyndi Loveless of Batavia, Ohio. See their pictures. And check out our website for our upcoming contest.
Fire Safety Contest
Though cooking is the main cause of house fires overall, problems with heating equipment—from furnaces to fireplaces to space heaters—surpass it in the winter. We’re asking you to help make this year safer by sharing your close encounter with fire and what could have been done to prevent it. The two entries with the most compelling story and helpful prevention tip will receive a Kidde Nighthawk smoke and carbon monoxide alarm along with a second Kidde smoke alarm. Enter the contest now.
Don't Try this at Home
This month, we’ve included some viewer submitted “disasters” that were entries in our “DIY Disaster” contest. We’ll announce the winners in next month’s newsletter. Here’s a preview.
“Be careful when using an electric hedge clipper that you know where the electrical cord is at all times. Otherwise, you may have a snap, crackle, pop, and a cordless trimmer.” - Ricka
“Have you ever been painting on the inside of your house with children around? Well, I went up the ladder to begin painting trim with the paint can hanging on the side of the ladder. My grandson came running through the room (even though I had warned him not to run) and knocked the ladder. The paint and bucket went over his head. He was canary yellow from head to toe.” - Precious

From Dinner to DIY
Vinyl tablecloths, like the ones usually used on picnic tables, make great drop cloths for small interior paint jobs. These tablecloths are tougher than plastic sheeting and if you put the smooth side face down, they don’t slip around on the hard flooring the way canvas drop cloths do. Plus, the vinyl surface makes it easier to clean up spills. And even if you have to buy one, they’re cheaper than drop cloths.
