Welcome!
In today's housing market, homeowners are adding on to their homes instead of moving to a larger house. We've taken that trend to heart on Today's Homeowner with Danny Lipford®, adding 500 square feet of space to a ranch house in an upcoming two-part series called "Today's Addition". We call this master bedroom suite a "restful retreat" and believe me, with all the amenities we've added, you'll never want to leave.
But there's no snoozing around here, because October is a great month to take care of some things around the house, both inside and out.
Here's to your best home!

DIY Disaster Contest
For our October contest we're asking you to dig down deep and dredge up those home improvement nightmares you'd probably rather forget. To enter, simply post a comment on the contest page detailing your worst DIY debacle. The most entertaining entry will receive a Zircon Automatic Laser Level and the runner-up a Black & Decker 25’ Laser Tape Measure to make their future projects go a little smoother.
Don't Try this at Home
Nothing slows a project down more than having to run to the home improvement store for one little tiny thing. And when it comes to fasteners, homeowners tend to just make do with whatever they have around. But here are a few things I wouldn't do:
Use a 2" nail or screw when you really need a 1"
Use nails on hinges instead of screws
Use bright nails, or nails that aren't galvanized on exterior projects
Some hardware stores sell packages that contain a variety of fasteners, which is a good idea if you only do house projects once in a while.

Tape By Any Other Name...
Some people snicker when they hear that shiny silver tape referred to as duck tape, rather than duct tape. So what's the right term? Both are! Waterproof "duck" tape was developed during World War II to keep moisture out of ammo cases. After the war, someone discovered that it had lots of other uses including on "ducts" in HVAC work.
