People have been telling me for years I need to write a blog to share ideas and comments I receive from homeowners and a little about what goes on behind the scenes of our show. So now it's official. Check out my blog on our website. And in the meantime, here's some information to help get you through the dog days of summer.

Don't Try this at Home

As a contractor for over 25 years, I just assume people know to locate a wall stud either with a stud finder or just by tapping on the wall when they're hanging shelving. Not so. A friend of mine recently put up some shelves. They held just fine until the cat decided to jump on the shelf. Imagine the cat's surprise when the entire contraption came crashing down around him!

On the other hand, if you're nailing into the wall and you encounter something too hard, stop! Wall studs give when you nail or screw into them, copper water pipes don't (and believe me, you don't want a hole in that).

Seal of Approval

Granite countertops are becoming more affordable and therefore, more common in kitchens. But while granite countertops are tough and scratch-resistant they are vulnerable to stains like coffee. Just remember, granite needs to be sealed before you use it and every other year to maintain the finish.
